Results HVO Event Report: Holmdel Park -- May 30, 2009
Holmdel Park, Monmouth County, NJ

Event Director: Guy Olsen
Course Setter: Nadya Popova
Course Designer: Katya Dvinyaninova

Helpers: Dan & Zac Barker, GeeGee Blair, Judy Dickinson, Alan Lopez, Kseniya Popova, Bob Rycharski, Sergei Zhyk

Gorgeous weather contributed to full enjoyment of orienteering at Holmdel Park. Newbies and novices spent quality time in the woods, no matter if they were doing a fast white or a prolonged brown. The more advanced runners were given the opportunity to test their uphill running (or walking) skills and most had a good time.
Thank you to everyone who participated; it was a good turnout.

Results HVO Event Report: TOEC/Moneyhole Mtn -- May 17, 2009
Taconic Outdoor Education Center, Laurel Festival
May 17, 2009
Cool and mostly sunny weather
MD George Hawes
CS George Hawes, Betsy Hawes
Helpers: Jamie and Chris
37 starts, about 90 participants

One stolen control on both the Green and Orange courses presented a bit of a disappointment to the more advanced orienteers but the many competitors on White and Yellow were not involved. Lots of families and scouts turned out for a day of outdoor activites which included orienteering, canoeing, high ropes, and more. Bird banding was very exciting, as was the presentation on and with birds of prey that ended the day.

Results HVO Event Report: Saxon Woods -- May 3, 2009
Here are the green/red results of the Saxon Wood meet. Many punch cards and stubs for the white and yellow course were destroyed by the rain storm. We will try to reconstruct the results as good as we can.
The event had great courses, with e-punching allowing the use the woods in new interesting ways. The rain slowed down many runners, especially the people depending on glasses to read the map. One runner described the race experience as doing a night-o by day...
Course setter: Jeremy Colgan
Meet crew: Annette Borowitz, Bill Borowitz, Ellen Stibler and Stephen Stibler (e-punching).

Lake Sebago, American Canoe Association Camp, Harriman State Park, NY

Course Setter: Daniel Schaublin
Meet workers: Rich Sweeney, Dave Webber, Chris and Jamie, Betsy Hawes
Weather: cloudy and windy and cold, but the rain held off.
50 starts
61 participants
The crowd was small, in part because of the weather, but it was actually quite nice in the woods. Daniel’s courses were enjoyed by all. The buildings of the Canoe Camp were great for the registration, course copying and instruction.

Meet Director: Paul Regan
Course Setter: Paul Bennett
participants: 8; registrations: 5

On a weekend when many active HVO members were in Maryland for a national orienteering meet, we organized a local event for members not traveling. However the weather was cold & wet, which contributed to a small turnout. Wonderful courses were designed to use the best areas of the park. The few folks that came out had a good time.

Results HVO Event Report: Surebridge North -- March 22, 2009
Not a bad day for the weather, though a bit on the chilly side. Lots of people came out, both experienced and new, for the first event of the spring season. Bob Bullions set all possible courses. He made the map easier to read and with the exception of 2-3 runners, the changes were met with enthusiasm. Those who ran who might have prefered to have all the rocky ground and all the form lines included at least had a good workout and some good navigational challenges. Many people tried 2 courses and one couple completed 3! Many boy scouts worked on merit badge requirements. Special thanks to all who took the time to print their names neatly on the results slip!

Please write to hvopresident at aol dot com if you like to volunteer for an event. If you have never been an Event Director or Course Setter, we will see that you get a good mentor to guide you through the experience. Course setting is a great way to improve your orienteering skills and gives you a deeper understanding of the sport.

Club News Want to try Ski-O this winter?
HVO members wanting to try ski orienteering this winter should check the NY state ski-O schedule on the EMPO website (http://empo.us.orienteering.org/ski-o/schedule/) Some events request that you say you are coming so that maps can be prepared. There are always several levels of difficulty, so you may choose a course by either your age group or by your cross-country skiing ability. If you complete two events, you will probably qualify for the Empire State Winter Games at the end of February at Lake Placid. Check the dates and venues and give Ski-O a try this winter. Scholastic skiers are particularly welcome. If we have enough skiers, we can put together a club team for the first weekend in March at the Biathalon Center in Day, NY. See you on the trails!

Club News 2008 HVO/DVOA Dual Event: Take Back the Plaque!!! Plus a Night-O!
This Saturday, November 29, HVO will host its final events of 2008 on a newly revised map of Eagle Rock Reservation, in West Orange, New Jersey. That's right, there will be two events: The 2008 HVO/DVOA Dual Event, and a Night Sprint-O (plus White course).

For those of you who may not be aware, the Dual Event has been held annually since 1983. It is usually a regular local meet in New Jersey with White, Yellow, Orange, Green and Red (and sometimes Brown and/or Blue) courses; hosting duties alternate between HVO and DVOA (Delaware Valley Orienteering Association). A scoring system, which has undergone numerous revisions over the years, is used to determine the "winning" club based on results of the respective club members.

DVOA is the largest O-club in the USA, and they always show up in force with runners on every course. Therefore, a large HVO turnout is essential; even if you are not very fast, just finishing a course can help HVO's chances!

The Night-O will not factor into the Dual scoring, but will be a unique and somewhat rare orienteering experience. For those who just want to see what its like to orienteer in the dark (with flashlights or headlamps), we will still have the daytime White course available -- with reflectors on the controls. For those who wish to plunge headlong into the moonlit night at a less relaxed pace, we will have a Sprint-O. The sprint will be in a 3-loop motala (one-person relay) format, with a mass start (5:30pm, pending sufficient darkness). The sprint controls will also have reflectors, and flashlights or headlamps are recommended.

For those who attend both events, fees for the Night-O will be discounted. We will also have information on nearby restaurants available for those who wish to grab a bite to eat between events or apres Night-O.

For the most up-to-date information (including course data) on each event, click on: Day or Night.

Participants: 210
Starts: 124

Weather: Freezing, breezy and sunny!
There was a terrific turnout for a cold fall day, of both orienteers and event workers. Six schools were represented for the annual HVO-JROTC championship, with the team trophy going to O’Neill H.S. JROTC. (Have they been practicing with the West Point cadets?) In addition we had a large crowd for the other courses. Special thanks to Jennifer for letting us use the large utility room for registration and the HVO Board meeting…it was a life-saver by getting us out of the wind.

Event Director: George Hawes
Course Setter: Craig Weber
Event workers: Rich Sweeney, Betsy Hawes

November 1, 2008 was a perfect day for orienteering: sunny, not too warm or cold, dry. Craig Weber's courses were enjoyed by beginners and advanced runners alike. There was a large turnout of Army cadets, JROTC cadets, Service Brigade and boy scout troops as well as individuals. Most impressive were our beginners who went from a successful White course to completion of Orange and even of Red! Congratulations Danny Tsu, Joshua Passe and sister, and Joel Atkins!

Holmdel Park, Monmouth County, NJ

Course Setter: Katya Dvinyaninova (with help from her son Andrew)
Event Director: Bill Shannon

Helpers: Valentina Grigoryeva, Alan Lopez, Guy Olsen, Tom Pelnar, Nadya Popova.

Sunday, Oct. 19 was a beautiful Fall day. Foliage changing, sun shining, soft breeze blowing, and the temperature in the low 60's. A great day for orienteering. Only thing missing was a good turn out; 21 individuals competed on six challenging courses set by Katya Dvinyaninova. The low turnout was probably due to the late posting of the event on the club calendar.
